Here’s the part that surprises most families. Those “cute mistakes” — “wabbit,” “nana” for banana, “poon” for spoon — aren’t random errors. They’re called phonological processes, and they’re predictable patterns every child uses to simplify adult speech while their system matures. Each one has a shelf life. When a pattern sticks around past its expiration date, that’s when we start paying attention.

What are phonological processes?

Phonological processes are predictable patterns young children use to simplify words while their speech system develops — like deleting final sounds (“ca” for cat) or replacing hard sounds with easier ones (“wabbit” for rabbit). They’re a normal part of development. Each pattern typically disappears by a known age, and patterns that persist past that age can signal a speech sound disorder.

Think of it this way: adult speech is motorically hard. Little mouths take shortcuts. The shortcuts themselves aren’t the problem — the timeline is.

The chart: every major process and when it should be gone

Ages below reflect when roughly 90% of children have eliminated the pattern, drawn from the developmental norms in ASHA’s practice guidelines that SLPs use nationwide. Every child varies a little; these are the guardrails we use clinically.

So which ones do parents worry about too much?

Gliding. Without question. “Wabbit” generates more unnecessary panic calls to our clinics than everything else on this chart combined, and it’s one of the last patterns to resolve naturally. A four-year-old saying “wabbit” is developmentally right on time. A seven-year-old saying it is a different conversation.

Vowelization is its close cousin — “appo” for apple can hang around into early elementary and still be within normal limits.

On the flip side, the patterns parents under-react to are the early ones. Final consonant deletion or fronting in a four-and-a-half-year-old gets waved off as baby talk far too often, and those are the ones we most wish families had called about sooner.

When is it a speech sound disorder?

It’s time for an evaluation when a process persists a year or more past its elimination age, when multiple processes are active at once past age 4, or when unfamiliar listeners can’t understand most of what your child says. A useful benchmark clinicians have used for decades: strangers should understand about 50% of a 2-year-old’s speech, 75% at age 3, and nearly all of it by 4 to 5 — even with a few sound errors remaining. Recent research backs up the floor of that range: children should be at least half intelligible to unfamiliar listeners by age 4.

That intelligibility yardstick matters more than any single sound. A kid who says “wabbit” but is otherwise crystal clear is in a very different spot than a kid whose grandmother needs a sibling to translate.

The child uses processes that aren’t on this chart. Deleting initial sounds (“at” for cat), replacing sounds with /h/, or making sounds in the back of the throat that belong up front are called atypical processes, and they don’t follow the wait-and-outgrow rules. They’re worth evaluating at any age.

The child is frustrated. When kids start avoiding words, giving up mid-sentence, or getting angry that they’re not understood, waiting has a social cost even if the sounds would eventually resolve.

What happens if you wait too long?

Persistent phonological processes don’t just affect speech — they’re linked to later reading and spelling difficulty, because the same sound-awareness system underlies both. Longitudinal research consistently shows children whose speech sound disorders persist to school age face higher risk for reading and spelling difficulty — and the effect can follow them into later schooling. Treating patterns before kindergarten protects more than pronunciation.

This is the part I wish more pediatricians mentioned. Phonological awareness — hearing that “cat” has three sounds, that “cat” and “hat” rhyme — is the raw material of phonics. A child whose brain still files “cat” and “tat” as the same word is working with fuzzy raw material.

None of this is meant to scare anyone. It’s meant to reframe the question. “Will he outgrow it?” is usually the wrong question. The better one is: “Is this pattern on schedule?” Now you have the chart to answer it.
